One of the biggest beauty trends to come from the early aughts was Brazilian waxing. Thanks to the J Sisters who pioneered the hair removal method, gone were the days of balancing one foot on the toilet while the other was firmly pressed on the ground to capture each and every hair in your pube region with a razor or, dare I say it, Nair. Unfortunately, the latter was my history with hair removal until I grew old and brave enough to finally book my very first Brazilian wax appointment.
Well, I was about to find out. Conjuring up the courage to get a Brazilian was a challenge in itself. Upon arrival at my local European Wax Center, I immediately switched my initial Brazilian appointment for a bikini line wax and became the laughing stock of my group chat that day.
But, I couldn't go out like that. On a mission to redeem myself, I switched back to a Brazilian wax and my wax specialist, Christine, was extremely understanding. I was instructed to remove my pants and lie down on the red waxing table with my knees bent and legs apart.
After applying a cleaning solution to my private area, followed by a pre-wax oil "It creates a light barrier between the skin and the wax," she explained , I peered over my bent knee to watch her stir the wax until it was hot and ready to be applied on my skin.
I'm no glutton for pain, so I shrieked and winced when she ripped off the initial glob of melted wax. Unlike waxing eyebrows, chins, and underarms, Brazilian waxing doesn't require any paper strips. However, the more she waxed, the easier it was to bear the pain because we developed a little system: inhale as the wax is applied to your skin, exhale when it's time to remove. What felt like a lifetime of agony only turned out to be a minute session, but I'd be lying if I said I would not return.
In fact, I already booked my next appointment. If you, too, are a wax newbie and curious about the procedure, here's everything you need to know before getting a Brazilian wax.
There's a bikini wax, where hair on the sides and top area along the bikini line are removed, and then there's a Brazilian, which leaves your entire pubic area bare! A Brazilian wax removes all the hair from your bikini area top, sides, and front , and those hard-to-reach areas in the back.
Simply put: everything goes. Sure, sun-kissed skin looks amazing, but you should wait 24 to 48 hours after a wax before hopping out in the sun. Freshly waxed skin is more prone to sun damage if exposed too soon. If you just must go in the sun, be sure to thoroughly apply sunscreen to the waxed area.
Usually your bikini wax will last from three to four weeks, though everyone's rate of re-growth is different. Just ask your wax specialist to point you in the right direction. Our advice is to wait 24 to 48 hours so your skin has time to heal and hair follicles can close.
Doing so will prevent any further skin irritation. Don't worry—it'll disappear over time. Generally it can last from a few minutes to a few days, depending on your skin sensitivity. Listen: we know it's going to be tempting, but try really, really hard not to scratch those freshly waxed areas. Your skin will be new and sensitive, so you should be careful not to cause further irritation by scratching.
If it's still driving you crazy, try a dab of aloe vera gel or our Ingrown Hair Serum to help soothe your skin. Some bumps are a result of post wax irritation and will go away on their own within a few hours to a few days.
To help calm your skin, you can use our Ingrown Hair Serum to help soothe and treat any ingrown hairs, bumps or breakouts. To prevent ingrown hairs or further skin irritation , we recommend using both our Ingrown Hair Serum and Ingrown Hair Wipes.
The serum contains glycolic acid for gentle exfoliation plus lavender, vitamin E and chamomile to calm and soothe skin. They also help to slow the regrowth of hair between waxing reservations. If you've just gotten waxed and are already seeing a 5 o'clock shadow, don't panic! Everyone's hairs grow in different cycles so it's possible that hairs below the skin's surface are just now sprouting after your wax service.
Daily moisturizing between services is key, since dry or brittle hair can easily break during a bikini or Brazilian wax service. So just go with the flow and allow these hairs to grow so we can remove them at your next reservation. Just keep in mind that your pubic area is often more sensitive during this time, so you may experience more discomfort than usual. In order to successfully complete the service, you will need to wear a tampon.
We have a policy against performing waxing services on sunburned skin or skin that's irritated or unhealthy. But once that gorgeous skin of yours has healed, you can call or click here to book a new waxing reservation. It's always best to refer to your doctor if you have any questions about bikini waxing services. For prescribed creams like retin-a or differin, we advise that you stop use seven days prior to your reservation and do not resume use until seven days after your bikini wax.
We will not wax you if you're on accutane or have been in the past 6 months. It's very dangerous to wax while on accutane and a doctor's note will be needed to receive services. This is why it's so important to inform our guest service associates of what medications you may be taking so we can provide you with a safe, comfortable waxing experience. First, congratulations!
Second, yes, you can still bikini or Brazilian wax. However, you may experience more skin sensitivity due to the hormonal changes your body's going through. Our wax specialists will make you as comfortable as possible during the service. For waxes the last two months of your pregnancy, we recommend checking with your doctor first. European Wax Center's policy is to require guests under 16 to have parental consent for bikini waxing services.
Each location has their own young guest policy when it comes to providing bikini line waxing services on minors. You'll need to inquire with the center directly or check with your local center for state and county guidelines to see what their age limit is.
We welcome everyone! We just kindly ask that you arrive on time. Waxing areas with tattoos won't cause any damage to your art or your skin. In fact, waxing can help brighten your tattoo by removing the dead surface cells on top of it.
For piercings, we recommend removing your piercing. If you can't remove it, your wax specialist will have to go around it which could result in leaving a couple of hairs that are too close to touch. Although the range of waxing services for men is different, we do have a comprehensive list of waxes to choose from. From body to brow to face, look no further than the wax experts at European Wax Center.
